Camden residents will have lots of opportunities to get active, try something new and build healthy habits this October, with Camden Active Month bringing a packed program of activities to the community.
The Camden Active Month program includes regular activities such as parkrun, free CrossFit classes, Heart Foundation walking and water walking groups, WalkSoccer, Track Nights and basketball, as well as one-off events including a Healthy Ageing Festival, Kids Yoga, Parent and Bub Yoga, Mindful Yoga, Mini Olympics and Play in the Streets of Birling.
There are also plenty of opportunities for children and young people to get active, with Macarthur Bulls school holiday clinics, rugby league, basketball, Oztag, Sydney Thunder School Smash and other sporting activities scheduled throughout October.
A major highlight will be the launch of a new Local Walks App, developed by South Western Sydney Health, designed to make it easier for Camden residents to get out and explore their local area. The app, which will be free to access, will feature 25 highlighted walking areas across Camden, with information about nearby bus stops and public toilets, while also allowing users to track their activity and standard fitness metrics.
The app will officially launch at an event Saturday 17 October, 10am, at the Onslow Park Rotunda, giving residents the chance to discover how it can help them incorporate more walking into their everyday lives.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Vince Ferreri, said Camden Active Month was a great opportunity for residents to find an activity they enjoy and make movement part of their routine.
"It's not about being the fastest runner or the best basketball player, it's about taking a nice walk, trying a new sport or getting the kids out and about," he said.
"The best way to get active is to just get moving and find something you enjoy. The new Local Walks App is a fantastic initiative because it makes it easier for residents to discover the great walking spaces we have across Camden, while helping them track their progress along the way.
"I encourage everyone to find an activity that works for them, get involved and make the most of Camden Active Month."
The Camden Active Month initiative has been developed in partnership with the Camden Local Active Partnership, a consortium of local services working to reduce physical inactivity and improve community health outcomes across Camden. The partnership is convened by Western Sydney Moving in partnership with Camden Council and South Western Sydney Local Health District.
