Kempsey Shire Council

Unless you've installed enough solar to get a refund from your provider, you're probably nervous about getting your next electricity bill.

If that's you, we've got a few tips to help you manage how much energy you use at home to reduce your energy costs.

Take steps to make your home more energy efficient.

If you can afford to, it pays to spend a little money in the short term to save a lot in the longer term.

  1. Replacing spent globes with LED lights, especially in the areas you use lighting most.

  2. If your home is not insulated, insulate ceilings, walls and floors. Even if your home is insulated make sure you seal gaps in walls, floors and ceilings.

  3. Fix dripping taps. You'll save on water and energy costs, because hot water drips keep your hot water system cycling.

No cash for big energy saving improvements? 3 simple actions you can take.

Look at the appliances in your home – how many can you turn off when not using?

  1. Turning appliances off when you're not using them to reduce their running time

  2. Use power saving features on computers, monitors and TVs

  3. Use smart power boards to turn appliances off rather than leaving appliances on 'standby'

How can I check the efficiency of my home?

Before you make any improvements first check how energy efficient your home is today.

We can all make improvements at home but how do we know what to do first? Grab a 'Save Power Kit' from the Kempsey Library and you can use it to see how much power your appliances are using, check for drafts (using an infrared thermometer) and measure the temperature in rooms and in your fridge!
