Town of Bassendean residents chosen for Your Move campaign

  • Previous programs have reduced car trips and increased walking, cycling and public transport use
  • Small changes to travel routine can make a big difference to health and wellbeing
  • Free program underway throughout Bassendean from February to May
  • More than 4,000 Town of Bassendean residents can participate in the next Your Move program, which has previously increased active travel such as walking, cycling and public transport in other local government areas.

Bassendean was chosen for this year's Your Move program due to its good rail links to the city and Midland, and has high potential to increase public transport trips and active transport use.

Over coming weeks, the Your Move team will be working with Bassendean residents to provide tips, tools, resources and tailored advice on how to incorporate more active transport into their routine.

Members of the Your Move program will contact residents via mail or phone calls, or residents and students can register themselves on the Your Move website.

Along with the Your Move program, the Department of Transport is working with the Town of Bassendean to invest in active transport infrastructure in the Bassendean area, making it easier and safer to get around Bassendean by bicycle or on foot.

The Department of Transport's Your Move program was successfully rolled out to 21,000 residents across Cockburn, Wanneroo and Victoria Park previously. Past projects have resulted in an average five per cent decrease in car trips per participant.

Analysis of the results also indicates that one year after the project delivery in both Cockburn and Wanneroo, there was a three per cent increase in public transport trips relative to choices prior to the program being implemented.

Residents, schools and workplaces across WA can also access a wealth of information and resources available for free by visiting https://yourmove.org.au/community/

As noted by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"I encourage residents, businesses and schools in Bassendean to get involved in the Your Move Bassendean program and take advantage of personalised coaching services and localised resources on the active travel options available in the area.

"Sometimes it just takes a bit of help, support and information to realise that there is a more active way to get to your destination - in Bassendean there is likely to be a path, bus route or train station nearby that will get you to your destination or part of the way.

"Choosing to walk, ride a bike or catch public transport, instead of always using the car, is a great way to get more activity in your life, save money and help the environment at the same time."

As noted by Bassendean MLA Dave Kelly:

"Partnered with the Town of Bassendean, I look forward to seeing residents examine how they can make the most of this infrastructure.

"Additionally, we're investing in further wayfinding signage, more bike safety signs, a bike repair station and more bus information modules during the program.

"Residents will notice these facilities pop up over the next two months and I look forward to seeing the local community get engaged."
