Transport Dept. Trials Extended Weekday Trading Hours

  • Extended weekday trading hours trial at Cannington, City West and Mirrabooka
  • DVS centres to provide all DoT transactions from 7.15am to 5.30pm weekdays
  • The trial follows successful Saturday blitzes to improve customer experience

The Department of Transport (DoT) will trial extended weekday trading hours at three Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) centres for 8 weeks from 30 June until 29 August 2025.

Cannington, City West and Mirrabooka DVS centres will open for all DoT transactions between 7.15am and 5.30pm weekdays, giving the community the chance to visit a centre before or after work and school.

The extended weekday trading hours trial follows the successful Saturday blitzes at the same three DVS centres that were introduced as a customer service improvement to reduce wait times for the community.

Around 12,800 people visited Cannington, City West or Mirrabooka during the Saturday blitzes, with the majority happy for an opportunity to visit DoT on a Saturday, without taking time off work or school to attend on a weekday.

DVS centres have experienced high demand for services in the past two years, with staff conducting 2,036,396 transactions and assessments in 2023-24, resulting in longer wait times. Last year, DoT created 43 new positions in metropolitan service centres to increase its capacity to meet the growth in demand.

A high level of interstate and international migration into WA has increased demand for DoT's general licensing services. This includes many new residents who need to attend centres in person to transfer their driver and vehicle licences from other jurisdictions or apply for occupational licences, such as National Disability Insurance Scheme worker screening or in the passenger transport industry.

All other metro DVS centres will open for usual trading hours between 8.15am and 4.30pm during the extended weekday trading hours trial.

Once the trial has concluded, DoT will evaluate staff and customer sentiment and feedback to measure the success of extended weekday trading.

As stated by Minister Assisting the Transport Minister Jessica Stojkovski:

"This trial of extended weekday trading hours is a positive step towards improving the customer experience at the Department of Transport's Driver and Vehicle Service (DVS) centres.

"In addition to increasing the number of staff on front counters, the Cook Government is working to improve accessibility to DoT's services for the community, such as extending weekday trading hours to enable people to visit a DVS centre before or after work and school.

"The Cook Government will continue to explore further options to reduce customer wait times, to reduce travel and wait times and ease pressure on DVS centre staff during times of high demand for services."

Comments to be attributed to Cannington MLA Ron Sao:

"This is an important initiative for drivers in the local Cannington area, reducing wait times so they can get back on the road and doing the things that are important.

"I encourage anyone who struggles with finding the time in the day to do life admin to take advantage of these extended hours."
