Trout Fishing Season Returns To NSW Waterways

Recreational fishers are expected to head to rivers, streams and lakes across NSW this October Labour Day long weekend as the 2026–27 trout fishing season officially opens on Saturday 3 October.

The opening marks the return of trout fishing to inland waterways following the annual winter closure, which helps protect spawning fish and supports the long-term sustainability of NSW trout fisheries.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) Program Leader Fish Stocking and Enhancement Operations, Jim Harnwell, said the Department was expecting plenty of anglers to head to the rivers, streams and lakes across NSW to celebrate the opening of the 2026-27 season.

"The NSW Government is again supporting recreational fishing opportunities and helping drive visitation to regional communities through DPIRD's fish stocking program which will see millions of trout and salmon released into waterways across the state.

DPIRD's Dutton and Gaden trout hatcheries play a key role in maintaining fish stocks for recreational fishing opportunities, producing millions of trout and salmon that are stocked into waterways across NSW each year.

"The NSW Government's fish stocking program continues to boost fishing opportunities and attract visitors to NSW, whilst operating under strict management controls to ensure sustainability of trout fisheries across the state.

"We encourage our communities and visitors to enjoy the trout fishing season whilst also reminding fishers to ensure they hold a current NSW Recreational Fishing Fee Receipt (unless exempt) and to familiarise themselves with the latest rules before heading out on the water," said Mr Harnwell.

Anyone planning on fishing in NSW should ensure they hold a current NSW Recreational Fishing Fee Receipt (unless exempt), which can be purchased online through Service NSW or from a fishing fee agent for as little as $7 for three days.

Information on freshwater fishing rules and regulations is available through the FishSmart App and the NSW Recreational Freshwater Fishing Guide.

The trout fishing season will remain open until the June long weekend in 2027.
