Truck driver arrested

A 36-year-old man has been issued an Immediate Disqualification Notice by Breath and Drug Bus Operations officers after he failed a breath test when his large truck was stopped as part of a Random Breath Test (RBT) operation in Middle Swan on Friday, 17 July 2020.

About 11:20pm the Hino road sweeper truck was being driven on Reid Highway, Middle Swan when the driver was stopped as part of an RBT operation that was being conducted.

It will be alleged the 36-year-old male driver failed a preliminary breath test. He was escorted to the Breath and Drug Bus where it will be further alleged he recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.107%.

He was issued an Immediate Disqualification Notice and was advised he would be charged by summons for Excess 0.08%.

A State Traffic Command spokesperson said it is concerning such a large and heavy vehicle was being driven by someone under the influence of alcohol.

"Every truck driver needs to remain alert and vigilant when driving on our roads. We have seen the devastation that can be caused by large and heavy vehicles when their drivers are impaired or distracted. Fortunately, on this occasion we were able to stop the truck before anyone was hurt or killed.

"There is no excuse for anyone to be driving any vehicle under the influence of alcohol – and it is both disappointing and frustrating to see the driver of a truck willing to put other road users at risk like this."
