Trump Again Attacks 'Sanctuary Jurisdictions': US

Human Rights Watch

United States President Donald Trump issued a new executive order on April 28, 2025, threatening to take away federal funding from state and local entities that the administration considers "sanctuary jurisdictions."

The executive order instructs the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security to create a list of state, county, and municipal law enforcement who have refused to cooperate with federal agents in the enforcement of immigration laws. Refusing to cooperate would qualify the agency as a "sanctuary jurisdiction," which would then lead to the loss of federal funding.

The following quote can be attributed to Vicki B. Gaubeca, associate US immigration and border policy director at Human Rights Watch:

"This executive order is a repeat from Trump's first administration that was challenged in the courts and, in many instances, overturned. Forcing police to enforce federal immigration laws disrupts community trust and spreads fear.

Public safety for US communities is placed at risk when people are afraid to report being a victim or witness of a crime because they are afraid of repercussions to themselves or to their family and friends. When community trust is broken, public safety is at risk for all."
