The delegation of Tomsk State University visited research and medical institutions of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The parties signed a few MoUs, one of which focuses on the creation of a mirror laboratory for biomedical materials. Such cooperation envisages joint works on international markets, including educational, research and technological.
The beginning of active interaction was laid by the Vice-Rector for International Affairs Artyom Rykun, who visited Myanmar and held a series of negotiations with the representatives of the country's research and academic community. The visit created the foundation for further stable partnerships and the subsequent visit of the Myanmar delegation to TSU.
Tomsk State University in Myanmar was represented by the teams of the World-Class Research Center "New Special-Purpose Materials" (WCRC), as well as the strategic technological project "Security Technologies" (Priority 2030).
During the visit, Alexander Vorozhtsov, the WCRC director, signed MoUs between TSU and the leading institutions of Myanmar - the Defence Services Medical Academy and the Defence Services Academy. The MoUs provide for the development and expansion of research and academic interaction, including the development and implementation of joint research programs, joint research, and the opening of a mirror laboratory for biomedical materials.
- These MoUs open up new opportunities for the integration of scientific schools, the exchange of knowledge and the implementation of joint projects in the field of medical technologies, - said Alexander Vorozhtsov.

As the head of the TSU Laboratory for Medical Alloys and Shape Memory Implants Ekaterina Marchenko explained, further joint research with the Defence Services Medical Academy (DSMA) implies preclinical and functional tests of the developed implants, taking into account the peculiarities of the biomechanical behavior of living tissues in the created mirror laboratory. Scientists will also simulate the functional loads on an implant made of a superelastic titanium nickelide alloy.
Alexander Vorozhtsov together with the leading researcher of the Laboratory for Medical Alloys and Shape Memory Implants Evgeny Topolnitsky held a workshop on modern approaches to chest wall reconstruction where the participants discussed the prospects for the introduction of medical materials and technologies developed at TSU in Myanmar.
Ekaterina Marchenko was also an invited speaker at the 31st Myanmar Military Medical Conference. Her presentation was devoted to modern medical materials developed at TSU.
The implementation of joint research and clinical initiatives confirms the high potential for cooperation between TSU and medical institutions in Myanmar and opens up new prospects for the introduction of Russian medical technologies at the international market.

The TSU delegation also met with the head of the Buddhist monks of Myanmar and one of the main Buddhist monks in the world, Ashin Nyanissara. He supervises 40 clinics, and during the meeting expressed his willingness to cooperate in the field of biomedical materials. Besides, he proposed to hold a seminar on Buddhist philosophy and culture at TSU in September and to discuss opportunities for teaching Russian to young people in Myanmar.
It is worth noting that TSU has been developing cooperation with Myanmar universities since 2022. Since 2023, at the invitation of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the delegation of Tomsk State University regularly takes part in the conference on science and technology development (CSTD). Currently, there are 8 agreements between TSU and Myanmar organizations, and Myanmar students regularly take Russian language courses at Tomsk State University.
Students from Myanmar mainly study several areas at TSU: political science, physics, robotics, international relations. Most of them chose posy-graduate and doctoral programs.
For reference: The World-Class Research Center "New Special Purpose Materials" (WCRC) was established by the decision of the Commission for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation in May 2025 as part of the national project "New Materials and Chemistry". Tomsk State University is the coordinator of the center. The WCRC development program is officially supported by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of the Russian Federation, and the administration of Tomsk Region.
