As put by Inspector Ash Gurney, acting Whanganui Area Commander:
Two people have been taken into custody following a fleeing driver incident across the Central district earlier today, that has ended at Rangiotu, southwest of Palmerston North.
Police sighted a vehicle of interest in the Marton area at around 4:30pm, and signalled for it to stop.
The driver failed to do so, and officers did not pursue due to the manner of driving.
Just before 5pm, the vehicle of interest was again sighted heading west towards Whanganui on State Highway 3.
Officers set up road spikes however the vehicle avoided them and continued to flee.
Due to the manner of driving and associated risks, officers did not pursue the vehicle.
As it left Whanganui, the vehicle turned around just before the intersection with Heads Road, colliding with a Police vehicle at low speed.
No injuries were reported, however the Police vehicle was damaged and is not driveable.
The vehicle was sighted again by Police at around 6pm travelling south through Bulls where attempts to spike the vehicle were again unsuccessful.
At about 6:25pm, the vehicle was involved in a crash nearLevin, and continued driving, no injuries were reported.
Just after 7pm, Police received a call reporting the vehicle had crashed into a fence on Rangiotu Road.
Officers were quickly on the scene, and two occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without further incident.
Charges against the two are being considered.
