Two die after suspicious house fire at Tamworth

The bodies of two people have been discovered following a suspicious house fire at Tamworth this morning.

About 5.30am (Thursday 17 October 2019), emergency services attended Bylong Road after receiving reports of a house fire.

The bodies of two people, believed to be an adult and child, were located inside. They have not yet been formally identified.

A 27-year-old woman and a seven-year-old boy were taken to Tamworth Base Hospital. The woman remains in a serious condition suffering burns to her body. The boy was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns and is stable.

A 60-year-old man is currently assisting police with enquiries at Tamworth Police Station.

A crime scene has been established and the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire are being investigated. Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

A brief will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Inquiries are continuing by Oxley Police District detectives, assisted by State Crime Command's Financial Crimes Squad's Arson Unit.
