n Health Epilepsy Center has received the distinction of a Level 3 Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
"We are pleased that the Epilepsy Center at UConn Health was able to maintain standards for providing high-quality care to people with epilepsy during the public health emergency," says Susan Herman, M.D., president, NAEC.
Epilepsy centers provide a comprehensive team approach to the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. A patient-oriented team will typically include epileptologists (neurologists with expertise in treating seizures), neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, nurse specialists, EEG technologists, social workers, and others with training and experience in epilepsy care. Specialized epilepsy centers provide routine care to individuals with seizures or epilepsy, and specialize in providing comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to individuals with uncontrolled seizures (i.e., intractable or refractory epilepsy).
A level 3 center provides the basic range of medical, neuropsychological, and psychosocial services needed to treat patients with refractory epilepsy. The UConn Health Epilepsy Center has access to the latest technologies to diagnose and treat seizure disorders, including EEG, ambulatory and inpatient video-EEG monitoring, and vagus nerve stimulator programming. The goal of the center is the best seizure control possible with the least adverse effects.
"We are excited to receive accreditation as a level 3 center from the NAEC," says Dr. Jose Montes-Rivera, Epilepsy Division Chief at UConn Health. "It recognizes the high-level, high-quality care our dedicated multi-disciplinary team provides for the many people with this condition."
