UK and Moldova Plan Strategic Dialogue for 2023

The second session of the Moldova-United Kingdom Strategic Dialogue was held in Chisinau on 2 March 2023. It was co-chaired by Mr Justin McKenzie-Smith, Deputy Director of Eastern Europe and Central Asia Department at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the UK, and Mr Vladimir Cuc, State Secretary of the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

The Dialogue was established in the Strategic Partnership, Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, signed at the end of 2020.

During the meeting, representatives from both countries addressed a wide range of topics of Moldovan-British cooperation, which has intensified since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The UK government has provided £12.35 million of support for the humanitarian response in Moldova, part of our wider £220 million contribution to the Ukraine humanitarian response.

The UK is also supporting Moldova in areas such as anti-corruption, energy security, democracy-building, private sector development, independent media and cyber security. At the Dialogue, Moldova and the UK also reaffirmed the importance of law enforcement cooperation and the security and defence partnership, and discussed ongoing activities that are vital to addressing regional threats.

At the end of the meeting, the UK and Moldova reaffirmed their commitment to work together across the above mentioned areas to further boost the bilateral partnership.

Moldova's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicu Popescu, meets the UK delegation.
