UN Expert to Assess Migrant Situation in Mauritania

GENEVA - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Gehad Madi, will visit Mauritania from 2 to 12 September 2025.

During his visit, the Special Rapporteur will assess the country's current laws, policies and practices and their impact on the human rights of migrants.

Madi will hold meetings in Nouakchott, Nouadhibou and Sélibabi with relevant government authorities, the judiciary, the National Human Rights Institution, United Nations agencies, regional organisations, civil society organisations, and migrants. He will also visit detention centres and temporary reception facilities.

The expert will hold a press conference on Friday 12 September 2025 at 11:30 (Nouakchott) at UNICEF. Access is strictly limited to journalists. To register for the press conference, please email and use the subject line: Registration request for the press conference on Friday 12.

The Special Rapporteur will present his report to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2026.
