UN Experts Mark 40 Years of Right to Development

GENEVA / NEW YORK - UN experts will meet in New York from 21 to 23 April to mark 40 years since the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development, examining how it can be realized in a context of economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions and rapid technological change. Public meetings of the 13th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development will be webcast live.

After opening the session at 10:00 on Tuesday 21 April, the Expert Mechanism will hold a general debate with Member States and other relevant stakeholders (15:00-18:00). The next day sees the Expert Mechanism hold panel discussions on two draft studies to address their findings and welcome further inputs. These are "Artificial intelligence, cultural rights, and the right to development" (10:00- 11:30) and "Peace and security and the right to development" (11:30-13:00).

The Expert Mechanism will also hold four focused thematic dialogues on:

- The role of regional mechanisms in realizing the right to development

(Wednesday 22 April 15:00-16:30)

- Advancing non-discrimination, equality and development for all: 40 years of the right to development and 25 years of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (Wednesday 22 April 16:30-18:00)

- An interactive chapter-by-chapter discussion on the draft international covenant on the right to development (Thursday 23 April 10:00-13:00)

- Participation, inclusion and the right to development of migrants (Thursday 23 April 15:00-16:30)
