UN Toxics Expert to Visit Mexico

GENEVA - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the implications for human rights of the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and wastes, Marcos Orellana, will visit Mexico from 9 to 20 March 2026.

The expert will examine the human rights situation in relation to the environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and waste in the country, including plastic waste and pollution. He is particularly interested in identifying challenges, good practices and areas of regional and international cooperation.

The Special Rapporteur will meet with various State institutions and representatives, human rights and civil society organisations, affected communities, academics, and industry.

Orellana will hold a press conference on Friday, 20 March 2026 at 13:00 (local time) at Hotel Emporio Reforma, Av. P.º de la Reforma 124, Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, 06600 Mexico City. Access will be strictly limited to accredited journalists.

The report on the visit will be presented to the Human Rights Council in 2026.
