Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Ghulam Asghar Khand in the city of Khairpur in Pakistan, on 7 August.
I condemn the killing of Ghulam Asghar Khand. Violence against journalists undermines freedom of expression, and therefore the citizens right to know. Ghulam Asghar Khand was working for Sobh, a Pakistani daily newspaper in the Sindhi language. He was reportedly shot at least nine times by unknown assailants riding motorcycles while he was at his guest house in Ameer Bux, a village near Khairpur.
In 2012, Khand's elder brother Mushtaq Khand, who was also a journalist working for the privately-owned Dharti TV, was killed while covering a public meeting. His killing was condemned by UNESCO Director-General.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
