ASM, BVGH Unveil New Digital Scientific Writing Course

Washington, D.C. and Seattle, Wash.- ASM and BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) are launching a new 10-session digital lecture series on scientific writing, with initial focus on peer-reviewed manuscripts, and tailored to meet the needs of scientists globally. Opportunities for professional development are limited for many scientists in low-resource settings, not only for technical skills in specific disciplines (e.g., microbiology, oncology, clinical), but also for general professional skills such as preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications. These skills are critical tools for career advancement.

Series topics include selecting journals and publication processes; strategies and approaches to writing the sections of a manuscript (e.g., introduction, methods, results); figures and table development; authorship and ethical considerations; and applications and use of artificial intelligence. Each session's duration is 90 minutes, with Q&A available after the presentations.

Speakers represent diverse geographic and cultural backgrounds and are experts in their respective fields. Several speakers are current ASM journals editors who can provide insights into their processes for reviewing manuscripts. Other speakers include scientists with a strong track record for publications, who will share their strategies and approaches to designing and drafting their manuscripts.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Sharjeel Chaudry, MPhil, Dow University of Health Sciences, Pakistan.
  • Neelika Malavige, DPhil, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Sri Lanka.
  • Marcio Rodrigues, Ph.D., Fiocruz, Brazil.
  • Sarah Fankhauser, Ph.D., Oxford College of Emory University, U.S.
  • Tatiana Castro Abreu Pinto, Ph.D., Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • Wil Ngwa, Ph.D.,Johns Hopkins University, U.S.

The first session is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m. U.S. ET/3 p.m. UTC. Registration is free for all.

Certificates of Completion will be awarded to individuals who complete the pre- and post-course exam and attend at least 1 lecture live. Certificates of Completion with Merit are awarded to individuals who complete the pre-course exam, pass the post-course exam with a score of 70% or higher and attend 65% or more lectures live on Zoom, or through the BVGH Learn platform during the course.
