UNESCO Chief Mourns Death of Roshdi Sarraj in Palestine

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has deplored the death of Roshdi Sarraj in Palestine on 22 October 2023.

I deplore the killing of Roshdi Sarraj. I reiterate my call to respect UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel as civilians in situations of conflict and I call for a full investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Roshdi Sarraj was killed in an airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip. The photojournalist was the co-founder of Ain Media, and he also worked as a fixer for other media.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
