UniSQ Materials Scientist Awarded Nations Top Research Honour

UniSQ

A University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) researcher has been named Australia's leading expert in chemical and material sciences, reinforcing the University's standing as a world leader in advanced composite materials research.

Materials scientist Professor Pingan Song received the top honour in The Australian's 2026 Research magazine, which ranks Australia's most influential researchers and institutions across 250 fields.

Produced by The Australian and the League of Scholars, the annual rankings are based on impact scores that measure the influence and quality of research published over the past five years.

Professor Song – recognised for his work in polymers and plastics – said he was honoured by the recognition.

"It will further stimulate me to explore what has not yet been answered and to push the boundaries of knowledge in my research fields, while developing sustainable solutions to the down-to-earth challenges facing industry," he said.

"This recognition also reflects the contributions of my students, collaborators and mentors, as well as the universities I have worked with over the years."

He said several recent breakthroughs highlighted the real-world impact of his team's work.

"One of my favourite projects is the design of a robust and high-efficiency polymeric fire-retardant coating, which has shown strong potential across many applications, including building and construction, energy, transport, and health," he said.

"Another breakthrough I'd like to highlight is our cost-effective method for upcycling waste masks, helping address what has become a significant challenge for the health sector.

"These projects represent the intersection of scientific curiosity and practical impact – something I strive for in all my research."
