Law and Engineering lead UOW's top subject rankings
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has performed strongly in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, announced today (21 January).
UOW ranked in the world's top 200 in four out of 11 subject categories, showcasing strengths in Business and Economics, Engineering, Law, and Physical Sciences. Business and Economics secured a Top 200 position globally. Law and Engineering both ranked in the Top 150, underlining UOW's strong ties with industry and its focus on making a positive impact in the community.
Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu said the results recognise our areas of strength and reflect UOW's commitment to education and research that make a real difference.
"Our strength across these subject areas shows how UOW is tackling challenges that matter to society," Professor Lu said.
"For students, it confirms that choosing UOW means learning in a future-focused environment that applies knowledge to real-world problems and prepares graduates to create societal impact and change the world for the better"
The University improved in two subject areas in the 2026 rankings. Arts and Humanities advanced to the 251–300 band, while Business and Economics moved further into the global top 200, signalling growing recognition of UOW's teaching and research strengths.
Five subjects maintained stable positions compared to the previous year, demonstrating consistent performance across Life Sciences (201-250), Physical Sciences (176-200), Medical and Health (251-300), Computer Science (251-300), and Social Sciences (251-300).
The rankings assess universities using a range of performance indicators, including teaching, research quality, citations, international outlook, and industry engagement. The results align with the University's strategic focus on Global Excellence and Connection, strengthening UOW's international standing while delivering impact through research and teaching that is deeply connected to industry and community.
