UPDATE number one - Tropical Cyclone Ellie Warning

Tropical Cyclone Ellie has formed west of the Daly River mouth and is now likely to cross the coast as a category 1 tropical cyclone between Dundee Beach and Wadeye within the next 6 hours.

Tomorrow morning Tropical Cyclone Ellie is expected to track southwards across the southern Daly District inland from the coast and weaken below cyclone strength by tomorrow afternoon.

Gales with gusts up to 120 kilometres per hour are possible tonight between Dundee Beach and Wadeye, and inland to Daly River (Nauiyu).

Gales with gusts to 90 kilometres per hour may develop south of Wadeye to the NT/WA border on Friday, with a small risk of extending west to Wyndham.

Heavy rainfall is occurring over the Daly district, and likely to extend into the Gregory and east Kimberley districts tomorrow.

Tides will be higher than normal between Dundee Beach and Wyndham. Large waves may produce minor flooding of low-lying coastal areas.

Incident Controller Kylie Anderson said "Those in Wadeye and the surrounding areas should take action to complete preparations. Check your household plan and listen for the next advice.

"Emergency Services are keeping a close eye on the possible tracks of this storm and our local emergency management teams have activated their plans and are making the necessary preparations to see their communities safely through this event.

"Heavy rains and gales are expected. Please use all safety precautions and do not attempt to cross any flooded roads or crossings. If it's flooded, forget it."
