Recent very high tides and powerful winds have caused significant damage to the timber structure at both ends of the Merimbula Boardwalk, prompting Bega Valley Shire Council to close these sections for public safety.
The central section of the boardwalk remains undamaged and accessible via Bodalla Place which is at the end of Benandra Avenue.
Council staff have undertaken initial assessments of the damage and are currently developing repair options for the two affected sections.
This work includes preparing a detailed scope of works, identifying construction methods and estimating costs.
"This is an environmentally sensitive site and we are working closely with NSW Fisheries to make sure any works meet environmental requirements," Parks, Aquatics and Recreation Manager, John Grady said.
"We are also asking the community to please avoid walking around closed sections or through nearby vegetation to protect the fragile local environment."
A temporary works plan is being prepared to allow safe public access to more of the boardwalk over the next 12 months, before the entire structure is closed for a major upgrade scheduled to begin in July 2026.
"The new boardwalk will be built from more durable materials, be elevated to better withstand tidal and storm surges, and will be designed with a 50 to 100-year lifespan," Mr Grady said.
"We're waiting on the outcome of the Development Application, which we expect to hear about in June.
"If the DA is approved, we'll put the project out to tender in August and look to award the contract by December. After that, about four to six months is needed for detailed works approvals and fabrication to get everything ready before construction can begin.
"We're aware of the community's love for this boardwalk and understand the disruption is frustrating. But we're also committed to delivering a safe, long-term, resilient and enjoyable solution for the community in what is a complex and environmentally sensitive location."
Council will provide a further update on repair options and timeframes within the next fortnight.
