Update Police appeal for information on Coolangatta assault

Detectives appealing for public assistance to help locate a 26-year-old man believed to have been assaulted in Coolangatta, have released his image has they hold grave concerns for his welfare, Queensland Police say.

Around 10pm on January 24, police located a white BMW believed to either belong to or is associated with Benjamin Joseph Thornton (pictured) who appears to have been assaulted near a sports club on Binya Avenue.

Initial investigations indicate that a group of men associated with a dark-coloured four wheel drive wagon and a dark-coloured utility were involved in the assault.

Police believe the assault may have included the discharge of a firearm.

Both vehicles were driven from the scene at speed.

Police are trying to locate Mr Thornton as there are grave concerns for his welfare.

Detective Inspector Marc Hogan said that police are appealing for any information on Mr Thornton’s whereabouts.

"Police hold grave concerns for his welfare as we believe he may have been injured but we have yet to locate him," Detective Inspector Hogan said.

"We are also asking anyone who may have seen anything in the vicinity of the sports Club especially in the carpark directly across from the club to contact police."

Investigations are continuing.
