Upper House demands secret modelling and assessments of Daniel Andrews' new housing tax

Liberal Party Victoria

In a motion carried in the Victorian Upper House this morning, the House expressed concern at the negative impact of the Andrews Labor Government's new housing tax on housing affordability in metropolitan Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat.

The Upper House demanded that the Government release its modelling, assessments or examinations in relation to the impact the new tax would have on housing affordability and the capacity of young families to purchase a new home.

Shadow Treasurer David Davis said the new tax would put the dream of home ownership out of reach for many.

"Labor's nasty new housing tax will, when introduced, further smash housing affordability, further pricing young Victorians out of the housing market," Mr Davis said.

"Labor has introduced 40 new and increased taxes and this nasty new tax would be the 41st.

"The tax would impose an additional $20,000 on the price of a median priced house in metropolitan Melbourne. How could this new tax do anything other than damage housing affordability?"

Labor members spoke against the motion, but did not call a vote, instead agreeing to its passage.
