Today, the United States announced more than $206 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help address urgent needs in Ukraine resulting from Russia's brutal war. U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced the additional humanitarian assistance, which includes more than $54 million from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and more than $152 million from the U.S. Department of State, during a visit to Ukraine.
The Government of Russia's continued attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure have killed more than 9,500 people - including more than 550 children - and injured thousands of others. Fighting has also displaced millions, more than six million refugees have fled the country and more than five million have been internally displaced inside Ukraine.
Additionally, attacks on infrastructure continue to create humanitarian, environmental, and economic consequences for the people of Ukraine, cutting off populations from electricity, heat, water, and other essential utilities.
This additional humanitarian assistance will help USAID partners continue providing life-saving aid, including multi-purpose cash assistance, health services, shelter, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services to millions of vulnerable people in Ukraine. The assistance also includes support for comprehensive protection activities, including case management and psychosocial support services for the most vulnerable populations across the country.
This additional funding also includes a $25 million contribution to the UN-managed Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF). The UHF is a rapid and flexible response mechanism that enables UN and international and Ukrainian non-governmental organizations, including civil society organizations, community-based organizations, and volunteer groups working on the ground in Ukraine to provide life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable and conflict-affected communities impacted by the war in Ukraine.
The U.S. has provided more than $2.8 billion in humanitarian assistance alone since the beginning of the war, including nearly $2 billion from USAID to support people in Ukraine and those displaced to neighboring countries. We continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and all those affected by Russia's unjust war.
