The following statement can be attributed to Acting Director City Services Rod Thomas
Many councils across Australia use glyphosate as an important tool to help conserve and enhance the environment and maintain public spaces. It allows councils to tackle invasive weeds that would otherwise threaten valuable natural assets and habitats.
Current Australian standards state that glyphosate can be used safely. The latest advice from Australian Government agency Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) states that glyphosate can be used by councils, provided the products are registered with the APVMA and used according to the label instructions.
The City seeks to minimise our use wherever possible and has strict controls over where and when it can be used. We regularly review our procedures and precautions for all chemicals, with the health and safety of our employees and the wider community our top priority.
The City is supportive of the Victorian Government's review into how glyphosate products are used for its public land management.
