New research has shown that even partial completion of Vocational Education and Training (VET) is delivering real outcomes for Australians, equipping people with practical, job‑ready skills that help them get into work, build their careers, and stay connected to learning over their lifetime.
Jobs and Skills Australia's (JSA) Partial VET completion: Insights on outcomes and pathways paper shows that VET partial completers have measurable improvements in employment and income, reduced reliance on income support and strong, consistent outcomes for apprentices and trainees.
It also shows that partial VET completion improves outcomes across priority cohorts, including regional Australians, women and First Nations graduates. This highlights the continued need for targeted support, though gaps remain compared to full graduates.
JSA's research shows that partial completer apprentices and trainees achieved a 90 per cent employment rate - above the national average for VET partial completers of 75 per cent - and a median income uplift of $13,800 as a result of training, which is almost double the national median uplift of $7,000 for VET as a whole.
While outcomes are strongest when a student completes their course, the evidence demonstrates that partial participation in VET still delivers meaningful economic benefits, including higher earnings and reduced reliance on income support.
The data comes from the VET National Data Asset (VNDA), which brings together a range of government administrative data sets to track the employment, economic and further study outcomes of VET students.
The Partial VET completion: Insights on outcomes and pathways paper is available on the Jobs and Skills Australia website.
