Veteran Leadership Sustained in Indian Ocean Territories

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The Australian Government has reappointed Ms Farzian Zainal as the Administrator of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, following a robust and rigorous merit-based selection.

Her new term will commence on 1 June 2026 for a period of three years, following her formal reappointment by the Governor-General. A swearing-in ceremony will take place on 27 May 2026.

The selection process was guided by the Government's commitment to transparent and accountable public administration. Candidates were evaluated on their leadership qualities, sound judgement and commitment to advancing Australian Government priorities across the region.

Over her first term as Administrator, Ms Zainal has helped strengthen community engagement across the region, reinvigorated the Indian Ocean Territories Health Service Community Advisory Committee, led the Emergency Management Committees across both Islands, chaired the Christmas Island Economic Futures Working Group, and assisted the Australian Government's engagement with the community on key issues.

Ms Zainal brings a great passion and commitment to her role and will continue to support the Australian Government's work to deliver on shared priorities for both Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands throughout her next term.

The Administrator is the Australian Government's most senior representative in the Indian Ocean Territories, and requires close engagement with both island communities, strong relationships with local organisations, and a steady focus on delivery of essential services in partnership with the Australian and Western Australian Governments.

Over the next term, Ms Zainal will continue to bring this practical, community-focused approach to supporting the region's shared priorities.
