The very best of Victoria's building and construction industry was on display at the Master Builders National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards over the weekend.
Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia said the state's construction contractors had dominated in the national commercial building categories "winning a swathe of major awards, including the coveted National Construction Builder of the Year awarded to Kane Constructions for the RAVC Cape Schanck Resort."
Rebecca Casson, CEO of Master Builders Victoria, said "The broad variety of Victorian projects honoured demonstrates just how vital the building and construction industry is to our state, as our population grows at the fastest pace in the nation."
The following Victorian builders were recognised with national excellence awards:
· National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award - $20M to $50M, Icon for Parliament House Accommodation Project.
· National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award - $10M to $20M, SJ Higgins for Huntingtower School Performing Arts Centre.
· National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award – over $100M, Kane Constructions for RACV Cape Schanck Resort.
· Toyota National Civil/Infrastructure Award – over $25M, CPB Contractors for Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project.
· Toyota National Specialist Contractor of the Year – Construction, HBS Group for Princess Theatre Façade Conservation Works.
· National Construction Master Builder of the Year, Kane Constructions for RACV Cape Schanck Resort.
· National Alterations/Additions Award - $650,000 to $1M, APC Build for Toorak.
Kane Constructions won the National Construction Master Builder of the Year award for the construction of RACV Cape Schanck Resort. The Award recognises the project as the best in the country for 2019.
"Kane Constructions had to beat fierce competition from other outstanding construction contractors and projects from around the country to be recognised for this prestigious Award," Denita Wawn said.
Set amongst the 7.6-hectare golf course, the new seven-level integrated resort brings together all accommodation and guest amenities into one single building. The building is characterised by its distinctive façade and sweeping curves with stone clad walls to the lower levels, designed to visually anchor the building to the earth and give the building immense presence on arrival.
"This outstanding building covers a mammoth 33,000m2 of total floor area and includes 120 new hotel rooms. It provides extraordinary amenities for guests, residents of Cape Schanck and visitors alike including new dining options, a 25m swimming pool and spa, day spa and function and conference facilities," Denita Wawn said.
The national award-winning builder also won the National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award – over $100M for this stand-out project.
Façade conservation works on Melbourne's iconic Princess Theatre won HSB Group the Toyota National Specialist Contractor of the Year in the construction category.
Works were extensive and included render and joinery repairs, replacement of damaged bricks, repainting using mineral paint, gold and silver leaf application to ornamental items, replacement of metal ornaments and additional slate and leadlight work.
"The conservation works on the Princess Theatre in Melbourne's city centre was complex and comprehensive. The iconic building was restored beautifully to its former glory by HBS skilled tradesman and a broad range of specialised trades," Denita Wawn said.
Icon took home the National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award - $20M to $50M for their Parliament House Accommodation project.
The new free-standing, two-level annex building was constructed to the east of the existing heritage-listed Victorian Parliament House. It is linked to Parliament House via a basement tunnel, ground level canopy and a bridge at the roof terrace.
"The Parliament House Accommodation project included construction of 102 offices with break-out spaces and amenities for Members of Parliament and their support staff," Denita Wawn said.
"It is cleverly designed in four unequal wings, partly sunken into the ground to protect views and integrate it topographically within the eastern garden. Icon have done an exceptional job here and are to be congratulated on their excellent build quality," Denita Wawn said.
