Victoria's Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has advised that he is resigning from his position with the Department of Health to take up a new role outside of government.
Professor Sutton is an invaluable leader in the field of public health and will be continuing this great work in his new role at CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, as Director of Health and Biosecurity.
Since joining the Department in 2011, Professor Sutton has helped to develop a strong and responsive public health team, providing critical health information and advice on a wide variety of issues and emergencies over the years.
He was appointed Chief Health Officer in 2019 and led Victoria's health response throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, playing a key role in keeping the community safe and informed.
This experience will no doubt be instrumental in his new role at CSIRO where he will remain engaged in health and wellbeing at a national and regional level. It also provides a great opportunity for us to strengthen the partnership between our two organisations.
We are currently working through details of the transition, including Brett's final day with the Department and any necessary acting arrangements once he finishes up.
I want to thank Brett for his enormous contribution to this Department and Victoria - and wish him well for his new role.
