A market in transition
With a population of 101 million and a workforce of 53 million, Vietnam is young, dynamic and hungry for skills. The country posted 7.09% GDP growth in 2024, a testament to its resilience despite global headwinds.i At the same time, the government has committed 14.4% of national expenditure (A$18.7 billion) to education, underlining its central role in long-term development.ii
Yet challenges remain. Employers consistently cite gaps in graduate readiness, while skill shortages persist in high-demand sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy, ICT, logistics, and healthcare. To address this, the Vietnamese Government has set ambitious education reform targets to 2030, with a vision to 2045.
The digital opportunity
Vietnam's digital economy reached A$54.6 billion in 2024, growing by 16%.iii Internet penetration stands at 78.8%, and mobile subscriptions are at 126% of the population. This has created a fertile environment for digital learning.iv
Edtech adoption is accelerating. The Vietnam EdTech White Paper 2024 estimates the value of the online learning market at A$552.7 million, with 750 companies active across platforms, tools, and digital learning solutions.v
This year, half of all students are expected to access online education, and 50% of higher education institutions will deliver programs partly or fully online. By 2030, the entire national education system aims to be digitised and integrated into national databases.vi
Emerging hubs and demand areas
The Vietnamese Government's recent restructuring - including consolidating ministries and education governance - will likely streamline policy and accelerate reform. Key cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Can Tho are positioned as education and innovation hubs.
At the same time, rapid industry shifts are creating pressing demand for new skill sets, including:
- Semiconductors: 20,000 engineers needed in the next 5 years
- ICT: Rising demand for AI and cyber security specialists
- Green economy: Shortages in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure skills
- Healthcare: 50,000 additional nurses needed by 2030.
Each of these sectors represents a high-value market for education and edtech solutions. These range from digital learning platforms and workforce upskilling to student recruitment, administration and financing tools.
A tech-savvy population and high internet penetration make Vietnam an ideal market for edtech solutions.
