Vietnam Fugitive Caught by AFP, Extradited

A Vietnamese national tracked down in Sydney by the AFP's Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (FAST) has been extradited from Australia to face charges in Vietnam of appropriating property by swindling.

Marking the first extradition from Australia to Vietnam, the AFP handed the woman, 67, over to the custody of officers from the Ministry of Public Security on Friday (15 May, 2026) for escort on a flight to Vietnam.

The FAST began an investigation into the woman after the Australian Government received an extradition request from Vietnamese authorities.

With assistance from Australia's financial intelligence agency AUSTRAC, through the Fintel Alliance public-private partnership, FAST investigators identified the woman's location and arrested her in the Sydney suburb of Canley Vale on 17 December, 2024. The woman was remanded in custody from that date.

AFP Acting Assistant Commissioner Kate Ferry said the AFP's FAST worked closely with domestic and international law enforcement partners to arrest alleged offenders who were the subject of overseas' arrest warrants.

"Australia is not a safe haven for international fugitives," a/Assistant Commissioner Ferry said.

"The AFP has a proven ability to track down alleged offenders and help bring them before the courts here and overseas. The AFP's strong and trusted partnerships with national and international law enforcement partners are critical to safeguarding our community.

"The AFP and Vietnamese authorities worked closely with the Australian Attorney-General's Department throughout the extradition process, which has resulted in this significant outcome for Vietnam and our bilateral cooperation to target criminal activity."

The AFP launched FAST in February 2021 and aims to assist police across multiple jurisdictions to jointly investigate alleged fugitives, share operational intelligence, and strengthen cooperation to conduct complex and cross-border investigations.
