Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs is calling on Perth residents to open their homes to Seeing Eye Dogs over the coming months.

Boarding and Relief carers play a vital role in caring for working Seeing Eye Dogs while their handlers are indisposed for reasons such as travelling or hospital stays.

According to Seeing Eye Dogs Mobility Instructor Matt Wood, there are several volunteer roles that they are hoping to fill.

"Our volunteers are integral to what we do," said Matt.

"Not only do they get to welcome a loving, well-trained dog into their home, but they can feel good knowing they are actively helping someone who is blind or has low vision.

"We cover all expenses, including food, medication and equipment. I'm also available for ongoing support and professional training."

The boarding and relief caring program in Perth involves Seeing Eye Dogs that are already graduated and working, so care periods are short term. The duration can vary depending on the needs of the handler.

"If you love dogs and are looking to give back to the community, then volunteering as a relief or boarding carer could be for you," said Matt.

The requirements for volunteer carers include:

  • Providing safe and secure housing and a space for the Seeing Eye Dog to sleep indoors.

  • Be able to physically care for a large dog.
