Volunteers thanked for odour and dust monitoring in Cockburn

  • Community members play key part in helping identify odour and dust  
  • The State's environment watchdog has finished a key community program with the help of the local community to help identify odour and dust sources in the Cockburn area.

    Environment Minister Stephen Dawson and Cockburn MLA Francis Logan said they would like to thank the 69 volunteers involved in the 10-week Community Odour and Dust Monitoring Program.

    The volunteers provided more than 330 online reports as part of the program, which is aiming to help identify the source of odour and dust emissions across the suburbs of Munster, Beeliar and Yangebup.

    The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation patrolled the area during the program, to correlate volunteer reports with their own intelligence.

    A report covering findings of the program - which is part of the Cockburn Area Air Monitoring Plan - is set to be released later this year.

    As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:

    "We're aware odour and dust is an ongoing community issue which we're keen to better manage.

    "The volunteers' contributions will be invaluable to our overall understanding of what is actually occurring and whether we need to change how we regulate industrial premises in the area."

    As stated by Cockburn MLA Francis Logan:

    "A big thank you to all the local volunteers that stepped up to assist with the monitoring program.

    "Identifying the source and characteristic of odour and dust in our suburbs is critical to the department in its task of addressing the problems."
