Von Der Leyen Meets Italian President Mattarella

European Commission

You are the President of a founding member of our Union and the longest-serving President of the Italian Republic. But today we welcome you here not only as a statesman but also as a European at heart.

Throughout your life, you have always worked to put Italy at the centre of Europe. In your very first speech as President, ten years ago, you called our Union 'a safe harbour and a frontier of hope'. You said that European countries need our Union to protect and project their sovereignty in the world. And ever since, you have always called on Europe to be ambitious and aim higher. You have demanded strong action on competitiveness, in line with the Draghi and Letta reports. That is exactly the topic we have discussed today in our College meeting. You have reminded us of our responsibility to protect our nature and leave the world a better place for our children and grandchildren. And you have been unwavering in your support for Ukraine. Two weeks ago, you said 'Nessun dorma'. We have heard your call. And today we will discuss how we can respond to it.

On a personal note, I would like to recall one of our meetings, in your hometown of Palermo. I was struck by how warmly you were welcomed by everyone – especially by young people. Young Italians look up to you – because you have always been a voice of wisdom and a point of reference. I want you to know that this is true for all Europeans. It is and honour and a pleasure to have you here today. So thank you very much for coming, Mr President.
