WA builder appointed for first projects of Perth Zoo masterplan

  • Crothers Construction appointed builders for Perth Zoo café and function centre
  • Work will commence in the coming weeks
  • Projects set to support 380 local jobs
  • Western Australian company Crothers Construction has been appointed to build Perth Zoo's new café and separate function centre.

Works on the two facilities are expected to commence soon, with estimated completion scheduled for mid-2023.

The new café - which will be built in the heart of the Zoo - will provide a variety of food and beverage options, alfresco dining opportunities as well as additional Zoo visitor amenities.

A separate function centre will be built on the western boundary of the Zoo with its own entrance off Labouchere Road for events, corporate functions, seminars and weddings.

Perth Zoo received an initial $13.5 million investment from the McGowan Government to enable the development of these two important community facilities.

The new works will deliver on the McGowan Labor Government's election commitment and provide 380 local jobs.

Building will be carefully staged to ensure minimal impact on the Zoo visitor experience and the 1,500 animals.

As stated by Environment Minister Reece Whitby:

"Congratulations to Crothers Construction for its appointment to deliver the first projects in the Zoo's 20-year Master Plan, the long-term redevelopment blueprint for Western Australia's State Zoo.

"Our iconic Zoo is on a redevelopment journey. It is very fitting that a local company, which has been proudly building in Western Australia for many decades, will build the café and function centre."
