- Cook Labor Government review to be conducted ahead of next 10-year WA Football funding agreement
- Next funding agreement will commence in November 2027
- Review will assess a number of areas critical to the future sustainability of WA Football
- Expert panel established to support delivery of the review
With the next Western Australian Football Commission 10-year funding agreement due to commence in November next year, the State Government has today announced a review into WA Football.
The review's terms of reference will specifically assess:
the ability of different WAFL clubs to raise revenue and sustain themselves into the future;
the varied ownership, management and maintenance programs of our WAFL grounds, and the impact it has on supporting new participation and the women's game;
options for a future home of WA Football; and
the resources and structure of the talent development pathways in Western Australia and how this compares to other states.
The review will be overseen by an expert panel comprising former AFL Commission Chair Richard Goyder, WA Football Chair Ian Callahan, former WA Football board member Amber Banfield and David Etherton.
The review is expected to be finalised and provided to the State Government for consideration by the end of this year.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti:
"With the next WA Football 10-year funding agreement due to commence in November next year, now is an opportune time for the Cook Labor Government to assess a number of areas that will be critical to the future success of the game.
"We now have a record number of people participating in AFL across Western Australia, but past success doesn't guarantee future success - we need to ensure the game continues to deliver for our growing communities.
"The review will also have a specific lens on the growth of the women's game, and how infrastructure is impacting participation by more girls and women.
"This review will ensure we have the evidence needed to support the future growth and sustainability of AFL in Western Australia."
