WA Minerals Institute Opens 2026 Scholarships

  • Applications open for the 2026 MRIWA PhD Scholarships round
  • Each scholarship valued at over $41,000 per year, with additional research and travel allowance
  • Innovative research related to the technical, economic, environmental and social aspects of mining are encouraged to apply

Mines and Petroleum Minister David Michael has launched the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) 2026 Scholarships round.

MRIWA PhD Scholarships are awarded to support outstanding PhD candidates pursuing research related to the minerals industry at any WA university. Four scholarships will be offered for 2026, including:

  • MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship;
  • MRIWA PhD Scholarship for Women;
  • MRIWA PhD Scholarship; and
  • MRIWA Indigenous Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

The MRIWA Indigenous Scholarship is awarded to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander postgraduate students undertaking a higher degree by research.

The scholarships are administered through the Institute's Education and Workforce Program and provides scholars with financial support via an annual stipend of over $41,000, a research and travel allowance of over $5,900 and an array of training and networking opportunities to refine their skills in research innovation, presenting, and networking.

Students will benefit from engagement with industry, academia and other members of the research community. They also participate in platforms to showcase their research at events including the MRIWA Research Showcase.
