WA Tops Post-Production Screen Project Competition

  • Streamlined incentives designed to attract large scale projects to use WA post-production services
  • Rebates to keep WA competitive to attract post-production, digital and visual effects (PDV) projects
  • Cook Labor Government investing in our creative industries to diversify the economy and increase skills and development opportunities for Western Australia

The Cook Government has made Western Australia the most competitive destination in Australia for post-production, digital and visual effects (PDV) projects.

From today, the PDV incentives program, delivered through Screenwest, provides a rebate to screen projects that use Western Australian PDV service providers based in Western Australia.

To ensure WA remains competitive with other jurisdictions and to help reduce confusion for producers, the PDV rebate has been streamlined to a flat 20 per cent when qualifying for WA PDV expenditure above the threshold of $100,000.

Previously the WA incentive offered a 20 per cent rebate on post-production qualifying expenditure for the first $500,000, and 10 per cent thereafter further for projects over $500,000.

The PVD Incentive is designed to increase business activity for WA PDV companies, as well as increase skills and development opportunities for WA PDV practitioners.

The WA PDV program is a component of the WA Production Attraction Incentive and aims to attract a greater number of post-production, digital visual effects projects to the State.

The WA incentive is in addition to the 30 per cent Federal Government offset, which offers a tax rebate of 30 per cent calculated on qualifying PDV expenditure for productions of at least $500,000.

PDV incentives offered in other States are set at 15 per cent in Queensland, and up to 10 per cent in South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.

The WA Production Attraction Incentive, delivered in partnership with Screenwest, has successfully attracted national and international films and television series to Western Australia, including The Surfer (Nicolas Cage), The Twelve - Seasons 2 and 3 (Sam Neill) and the Australian adaptation of the successful UK series, Ghosts.

As stated by Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk:

"The WA Production Attraction Incentive and the PDV program make WA the most attractive State in the country to undertake filming and post-production work.

"The Cook Government is supporting the ongoing growth of the WA sector and increasing creative employment opportunities here in Western Australia.

"These changes provide the opportunity to attract more PDV projects to the State, with the increasing pipeline of productions in the lead up to the opening of the new Perth Fims Studios.

"The Cook Government is committed to supporting the growth and investment in the local screen industry, growing local stories, and attracting new larger scale productions to this State."
