- New interactive report shows WA's recycling rate hits 65 per cent
- Perth and Peel on track to meet landfill diversion targets by 2030
- FOGO rollout driving better outcomes in household waste recovery
The Cook Labor Government has today released the 2023-24 Waste and recycling in Western Australia report showing continued progress towards a cleaner, more circular economy.
For the first time, the report is available in a new interactive online format, making it easier than ever for the public and stakeholders to track WA's waste performance.
The report shows Western Australia achieved an overall recycling rate of65 per centin 2023-24 - an increase of23 percentage pointssince the baseline year in 2014-15.
The Perth and Peel regions are also on track to meet its target ofsending no more than 15 per cent of waste to landfill by 2030, with a current diversion rate of28 per centin 2024-25.
This milestone reflects the collective efforts of households, businesses, local governments and industry to reduce waste and recover valuable materials.
Additionally, the report shows areas where programs aimed at driving recycling performance improvements should be directed, including the municipal solid waste (MSW) and commercial and industrial (C&I) sectors.
The continued rollout ofthe three-bin food organics and garden organics (FOGO) systemacross local governments throughout Perth and Peel aims to significantly boost MSW recovery in future reporting years.
In 2023-24, the16 local governmentsin the Perth and Peel region that had the FOGO system recovered up to 69 per cent of their domestic waste during the reporting period.
To further inform policy and program development, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation has completed aC&I landfill audit, which will provide it with valuable data to inform programs that can help recover more recyclable materials generated by this industry, diverting them from landfill.
The full 2023-24 Waste and recycling in Western Australia report is now available online on the Waste Authority's website in an interactive, web-based format, making it easier than ever for the public and stakeholders to explore WA's waste performance.
Comments attributed to the Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn:
"WA is making real progress in cutting waste and boosting recycling, with a 65 per cent recycling rate now within reach of our longer-term targets.
"Achieving a 65 per cent recycling rate is a significant milestone, but we know there is still more to do - particularly in the municipal and commercial sectors.
"FOGO is the single most effective thing a local community can do to reduce household waste and improve recycling outcomes - and the results speak for themselves.
"I thank local governments, industry and the WA community for their ongoing efforts and commitment to waste reduction."
