WA Youth Invited to Join Parliament

Applications are open for young people to debate real issues and experience democracy as part of Youth Parliament.

Young people across Western Australia (WA) are being encouraged to step inside Parliament House and have their voices heard, with applications now open for the 2026 WA Youth Parliament program (Youth Parliament).

Funded by the Department of Communities (Communities) and delivered by Y WA (formerly YMCA WA), Youth Parliament is open to people aged 15 to 25 who live in Western Australia and want to play an active role in shaping the future of the State.

Recognised as a key way that young people can share topics they are passionate about with the WA Government, the program gives participants a rare, first-hand insight into how laws are made. As 'youth members of Parliament', participants represent a WA electorate, develop and debate bills, and experience Parliamentary processes exactly as they operate in State Parliament.

The year-long program includes a residential camp, three in-person training days and weekly online meetings designed to build leadership capability, confidence and collaboration skills.

At the conclusion of the program, the bills are presented to the Governor, the Premier and the Leader of the Opposition for reflection and consideration.

In 2025, 59 young people took part in Youth Parliament, debating legislation on issues including artificial intelligence (AI), recycling and electoral reform.

Young people from all backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth and those living in regional, rural and remote communities. The program is apolitical and welcomes participants regardless of political beliefs.

Since its establishment in 1995, Youth Parliament has helped thousands of young people develop leadership skills, improve public speaking and form lifelong friendships through a shared commitment to civic participation.

  • Aged 15 to 25 years
  • Living in Western Australia
  • Passionate about community issues and representation
