Wagin business takes to food game like duck to water

  • State Government sponsors Good Food Guide Awards category to promote high quality local food producers
  • Niche free-range duck producer recognised as the best by chefs

A family-owned duck and game enterprise based in Wagin has been honoured as the inaugural Fresh Producer of the Year – a new category in the prestigious The West Australian Good Food Guide Awards.

Wagin Duck and Game provides free-range ducks to high-end restaurants including Rockpool and gourmet butchers such as Boatshed Market and Ruby Organic.

Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced the winner at an awards ceremony at Crown Towers last night, where a total of 16 awards were presented.

The Fresh Producer of the Year award category was sponsored by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s Buy West Eat Best program, to highlight the depth and breadth of local food producers.

As part of the judging process, chefs were asked to nominate their top three Western Australian fresh producers, irrespective of size, that supply kitchens with superb food, and in doing so help them plate the State’s most remarkable dishes.

The Good Food Guide is a celebration of all that is excellent in the WA dining scene across areas of food and beverage providers, chefs, restaurateurs, hospitality providers and service.

As stated by Agriculture and Food Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“Congratulations to Wagin Duck and Game business owners Marc, Leonie and Jos Brummelman for recognition of their free-range enterprise as Fresh Producer of the Year, against all other WA competitors.

“It’s a reminder that small enterprises committed to producing high-quality niche products that fit the needs of chefs can succeed with the right business model.

“The McGowan Government is proud to sponsor a fresh producer award as part of the Good Food Guide, which celebrates the very best about the food scene.

“Our Buy West Eat Best program champions the State’s food and beverage producers so when customers and consumers see its distinctive green bite-mark logo, they know they’re supporting local businesses.”
