Walgett Showground upgrades unveiled at annual show

One of the stars of the Walgett Show at the weekend was the showground itself with over $1.13 million in recent upgrades unveiled at the town's major annual event.

Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said the NSW Govermment had contributed over $408,000 toward the revamp of the Colless Grandstand, the Leonard Pavilion and an amenities block to support Walgett Shire Council.

"These upgrades are a game-changer that will make Walgett Showground even better for existing events like the annual show and allow it to host music festivals and other major events as well as conferences and weddings," Mr Anderson said.

Walgett Showground is is a key event for social connections alowing individuals and families to gather and celebrate while supporting the long-term sustainability of the Walgett community.

Crown Lands contributed $210,500 toward a rebuild of the grandstand, $149,600 toward a soon-to-be completed amenities block, and $48,000 toward the Leonard Pavilion upgrade.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders attended the show to officially open the upgraded Colless Grandstand together with Walgett Shire Council.

The grandstand upgrade has renewed a structure that was riddled with steel cancer and falling down into an asset that will serve the community for 60 or more years.

The upgrades mean the showground will remain at the heart of community life while also being able to host large shows and festivals that will attract spectators who will spend money in town.

The Leonard Pavilion has been transformed from a tin shed to a venue that's perfect for parties and events with new air conditioning, insulation, glass doors and a rainwater tank.

Upgrade work has supported local trades including builders, plumbers and electricians while improving community assets to deliver benefits for many years to come.
