Four children were among 20 people from eight different countries who yesterday May 20 became Australian citizens at a moving ceremony before friends and families at Horsham Rural City Council Civic Centre.
The new citizens - from the United Kingdom, Sudan, Fiji, India, Sri Lanka, Lithuania, Zambia, and the Philippines - officially pledged their loyalty to Australia in front of community members and Council representatives, marking a significant chapter in their lives and a shared moment of pride.
Mayor Brian Klowss and CEO Gail Gatt conducted the proceedings, during which each new citizen took an oath, and was presented with a certificate and native plant.
"Becoming a citizen is a deeply personal and meaningful moment. It's about belonging, contributing, and embracing the values that unite us as Australians," said Cr Klowss.
"The native plants are a symbolic gift representing new roots in the community and a growing future in Australia.
"This citizenship ceremony is a celebration not just for the individuals involved, but for our whole region. Our newest citizens reflect the growing cultural diversity of the Horsham region, bringing new energy, stories and experiences to our community."
Horsham Rural City Council hosts around six citizenship ceremonies each year on behalf of the Australian Government.
"It is a privilege to welcome our newest citizens, from all walks of life," said Cr Klowss. "This is a significant day for each of them, and it is a joy to know they have chosen to call Horsham home, and to help enrich our community."
