What to know: American realist painter Edward Hopper's works frequently explore themes of urban isolation in the postwar era, when psychology first recognized loneliness as a modern-day problem. Unlike Hopper's other masterpiece "Nighthawks," which depicts an illuminated diner from outside on the darkened street, "Sunlight in a Cafeteria" views two strangers' awkward social dynamic from inside in bright daylight.

The palpable tension between the well-dressed woman and man fills the frame, heightened by stark contrasts in light and shadow that reinforce their emotional distance. Seated at adjacent tables, they are undoubtedly aware of each other in the crucial moment just before a potential connection is made - if one ever can be.
