WA's Energy Sector Supercharged With 62 New Graduates

The Cook Government is delivering skilled workers for the energy sector, with 62 graduates starting work after completing nationally acredited training courses through Western Power.

Western Power works with registered training organisations to deliver several accredited programs to teach specialised skills across four streams: electrical, overhead linework, cable jointing, and heavy mechanical, all of which lead to careers in Western Australia's energy sector.

Sixty of the graduates have been employed by Western Power. The latest group of apprentices, trainees and university graduates included:

  • 19 university graduates, who are predominantly electrical engineers, completed a two-year program with Western Power;
  • 37 apprentices who completed four years of training, skills development and vocational experience;
  • three trainees who completed their Certificate III in Electronics and Communications; and
  • three trainees who completed their Certificate III in Business.

Each graduate has been trained and mentored by experts.

The 2025 Western Power Apprentice of the Year was awarded to Hannah Usher. Hannah was recognised for her exceptional leadership qualities, willingness to challenge the status quo, and her proactive role as a safety representative.

Western Power has recruited for its 2026 intake of apprentices and trainees. Successful applicants will start in February 2026.

As stated by Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"Western Power is helping to provide a pipeline of workers through programs delivered with registered training organisations, ensuring Western Australians benefit from our clean energy transition."
