The likelihood of water quality issues increases under warming conditions.
Key water quality issues:
- Harmful algal blooms: Algae can pose a risk to the health of humans, animals and the environment.
Blue-green algae levels remain elevated across much of the Basin including in northeast/central NSW, Menindee/lower Darling, and NSW/VIC mid-Murray regions.
- Bushfire contamination: Rainfall-mobilised ash, debris, and topsoil after a fire can pollute waterways and jeopardise the health of aquatic biota.
Post-fire contamination of waterways in parts of the VIC Basin may be an emerging threat following recent regional bushfires.
Water quality within the Basin is monitored by individual States. Any site-specific alerts, warnings or advisories are issued by those respective States.
