Weather Alert: North Storms, East Showers

BOM
G'day from the Bureau with your National Weather Forecast around the country for Friday the 13th of March. And firstly, we'll be watching widespread rain and storms across much of our tropical north, bringing heavy falls there with severe storms possible. And that's going to be, unfortunately, bad news for our flood-affected areas in the Top End, particularly our residents and communities on the Daly River.

Showers and possible storms also in north-east New South Wales and south-east Queensland, with moderate to locally heavy falls possible there. But this high pressure belt across southern parts of the country, it's going to be bringing fine and cooler weather to Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia. But also an upper low through eastern parts of WA that's going to bring showers and thunderstorms to southern parts of WA, with cooler winds for western parts.

But let's look at all of that in more detail. Firstly in Queensland, where we're likely to see rain and storms, as I mentioned, across much of northern Queensland with severe thunderstorms and heavy falls possible. Now flood-affected areas in the Wide Bay, Central Inland and western parts will thankfully be missing out on some of this rainfall, but those showers will be on the increase through south-eastern parts of Queensland on Friday.

Temperatures are pretty warm through inland areas in the mid to high thirties, and that warmth will also get into our coastal areas, looking to be in the low thirties there. Brisbane showers and 31 °C on Friday.

Down into New South Wales and those coastal showers continuing through central and northern parts of the New South Wales coast, maybe a bit more widespread through north-eastern parts of New South Wales. But on and west of the ranges, dry, warm and sunny weather on the way. Cooler in the far west only in the low to mid twenties there, low to mid thirties in northern areas and low to mid twenties for coastal parts of New South Wales.

Sydney, a few morning showers and then clearing, 23 °C. Canberra a partly cloudy day and 25 °C.

Moving down into Victoria and a pretty settled day on the way for much of the state. Maybe just a few showers here through eastern parts of Victoria, but generally warm and sunny across much of northern Victoria, with cool and cloudy conditions through southern parts of the state thanks to those onshore southerly winds.

Melbourne looking at a cloudy 20 °C on Friday, with temperatures in the mid to high twenties through northern areas.

Down into Tasmania, it's going to be a chilly start for some areas with showers across western and southern parts of Tasmania. Could even see some snow flurries on some of our highest peaks in Tasmania there. Temperatures in the mid to high teens, scraping twenties through northern and eastern parts.

Hobart looking at a partly cloudy day, 19 °C. Could be a few showers, though, about southern and western areas and the hills.

South Australia looking at a dry, warm and sunny one for much of the state. Temperatures in the low to mid twenties through southern parts of the state there, with partly cloudy conditions. Dry, warm and sunny with temperatures into the low thirties through northern parts of South Australia.

And that upper low in WA may just bring some showers and a possible storm to far western parts of South Australia as well during the day. Adelaide looking at a partly cloudy 25 °C.

Moving over into Western Australia and that upper low bringing widespread showers and possible thunderstorms through south-eastern and southern parts of WA on Friday. That's keeping a lid on temperatures as well, only in the low twenties there. That cooler air does spread further westwards, with temperatures in the mid to high twenties through south-western parts of WA, getting up into the mid to high thirties through northern parts of WA.

Perth looking at partly cloudy 28 °C and that rainfall staying well east of there, through the Goldfields and southern parts of the state.

And then finally into northern parts of Australia, widespread rain and thunderstorm activity across the Cape York, the Gulf, much of the NT and expanding into the Kimberley as well. And that rainfall also starting to spread southwards as well through the NT during Friday, and be even more widespread on the weekend, maybe even showers getting as far south as Alice Springs.

Temperatures in the low to mid thirties, even higher thirties to the far south, low to mid thirties elsewhere. Darwin, another wet and stormy one on the way, 30 °C with showers and thunderstorms there.

So with all this weather across northern parts of the country and ongoing flooding for many other areas, make sure you get the latest forecasts and warnings via our website and app, and listen to all advice from emergency services. And we'll be back here tomorrow with your weekend forecast.
