Week celebrates contribution of youth to Townsville

Young people across Townsville are being recognised for the positive contributions they make to our community as part of Queensland Youth Week from today (1 April) until 11 April 2022.

Acting Mayor Mark Molachino said young people in Townsville were a huge asset to the wider community.

"Townsville has a remarkable collection of change makers and trend setters between ages 12 and 25," Cr Molachino said.

"These include this year's Australia Day Awards winners, Young Citizen of the Year Kate Pemberton, whose movement Kate's Campaign for Change is benefitting those in need and at risk across the city, and Junior Sports Award winner Jacob Fowler, who has represented the state in water polo.

"But we also have many other young people across Townsville who strive to achieve, whether that's academically, through sport, by volunteering, or through any other number of activities. To all those young people, thank you for doing Townsville proud."

Cr Molachino said Council was continuing to support young people through programs and activities.

"Council supports Townsville Youth Council and events like their Open Mic Night later this month (29 April 2022) which will put young talent on stage and behind the camera to livestream the performance experience," he said.

"Council has also engaged young homegrown musicians to perform alongside headline acts Killing Heidi and Eskimo Joe at Townsville Eats across two blockbuster weekends in the CBD this month.

"It's important that we not only look to create spaces for young people, like our libraries and parks, but that we also provide real opportunity to talented young people who want to further their passions and turn them into careers."
