The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to show its commitment to providing more accommodation to help young people at risk of homelessness through our innovative Youth2Independence program.
Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street said it was excellent to see the difference that Y2I is making in the community.
"This Clarence site was opened in August and today I visited the residents to hear about how they are settling into their new homes and what having stable accommodation means to them," Minister Street said.
"We have expanded the Y2I program with Y2I Homes which provide smaller scale, home-like environments for young people aged between 16 and 24 who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness.
"This program is integral to our long-term plan of supporting more Tasmanians into housing as we continue to ensure that Tasmania is the best place to live, work and raise a family."
Minister Street said that the Rockliff Liberal Government recognises the significance of the Y2I program and has invested over $5 million to support its expansion.
"The commitment includes the delivery an additional 20 modular one-bedroom independent living units across four sites; Clarence, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport," he said.
"Three of these sites have been completed, with Burnie due for completion in early 2025.
"An additional 10 larger public housing properties, each of which will have a minimum of three bedrooms are also included in this expansion.
"The program is part of our Government's long-term plan and will reduce the cycle of young people experiencing homelessness by building positive and sustainable livelihoods into the future.
"The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to doing what matters and improving the lives of vulnerable Tasmanians through programs such as Y2I so that no one is left behind.
"That is why we invest over $38 million a year on wraparound services to ensure those who need help now are getting the assistance they need."
Y2I Homes expands the Rockliff Liberal Government's successful delivery of specialised, supported accommodation for young people, which currently provides 121 beds across three sites – 46 beds at Trinity Hill in Hobart, 50 at Thyne House in Launceston, and 25 at Eveline House in Devonport.
The Y2I facility in Hobart was recently finished, providing a further 26 units for young people.
